How is Kirei Board made?

Kirei board is manufactured from the raw stalks of sorghum, a grass grown around the world for food. After the harvest of the edible portion of the plant, the stalks are compressed, washed, and woven into sheets. These sheets are then stacked and heat-pressed with a formaldehyde-free adhesive to create blocks which are cut to the desired size.

Assembly and Finishing

Kirei Board has excellent dimensional stability and screw holding power, resisting warping and allowing solid attachment of cabinet hardware. Kirei Board can be finished with nearly any water-, oil-, and urethane-based paint, lacquer or stain.

Available Sizes

Kirei Board comes in ½”, ¾” and 1 ¼” thicknesses, in 1’x3’ and 3’x6’ sheets. Other sizes and shapes are also available as custom orders.

Environmental Benefits

Kirei Board reduces forest clearcutting, air pollution and landfill use. The sorghum stalks used in the manufacture of Kirei Board are fast-growing, rapidly renewable resource which is left over after the harvest of the edible portion of the plant for use in food. Until now, these stalks have been discarded or burned, adding to landfill waste and pollution. Kirei Board helps reduce this waste and ease deforestation by substituting for wood. In addition, Kirei Board is made using a non-toxic adhesive that does not contain formalin, helping reduce toxic formaldehyde VOC’s released into the ambient indoor air.
