The Electric Power Research Institute is shedding new light on the SmartGrid. They’ve been working hard forseveral years now to raise the awareness of the need for and benefits of afully functioning smart grid (see video below), and they’ve just published anew report that reflects the estimated costs associated with a more expansivevision of this new power delivery infrastructure.
According to the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, the SmartGrid will be designed to ensure high levels of security, quality, reliability, and availability of electric power; improve economic productivity and qualityof life; and minimize environmental impact while maximizing safety. Characterized by a two-way flow ofelectricity and information between utilities and consumers, the Smart Gridwill deliver real-time information and enable the near-instantaneous balance ofsupply (capacity) and demand at the device level, according to EPRI. And, that covers a lot of ground!
To put some reality to this broader vision, EPRI has updated its previous2004 report, providing a preliminary quantitative estimate of the investmentrequired to put this progressive, innovative infrastructure in place.
