Littleton, Colorado - March 2010
: The Holcim Portland cement plant near Penrose, Colorado, owned by Swiss-based international cement giant Holcim, is reportedly the first cement plant in the United States to go solar. The Holcim Penrose plant installed 528 solar panels, rated at 100.32 kilowatts, which will provide approximately 156,200 kilowatt-hours of electricity per year. The panels are arranged in four units, each unit contains 24 conventional solar panels made with polycrystalline silicone cells under glass inside an aluminum frame attached to Oldcastle Precast solar panel foundations that support the units.

Oldcastle Precast’s Littleton, Colorado manufacturing facility supplied the 44 patent pending solar panel foundations to Holcim’s Penrose plant. The use of non soil penetrating precast ballasted footings to support the solar panel assemblies helped reduce the overall environmental impact of the project.

Holcim Inc. states, “The solar panel project is just a piece of what the company is doing to avoid adding greenhouse gas emissions and show our dedication to renewable energy. Solar power, in this case, prevents an estimated 301,000 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions per year.”.

Oldcastle Precast has designed, engineered, and produced a wide range of product solutions, including precast concrete foundations, for multiple renewable energy related projects in Colorado. Oldcastle Precast has numerous innovative product solutions for a variety of alternative energy applications including solar, wind, and natural gas. Oldcastle Precast is dedicated to developing new products to support the renewable energy industries with a complete network of design, engineering, and manufacturing facilities to support projects throughout the US and Canada.
