The W.T. Jackson Primary School has been an integral part of the Atlanta Public School System for more than five decades. International Baccalaureate® distinction is one of the many aspects that make Jackson one of the premier elementary schools in Atlanta. With a growing student population, there was a need to increase the number of classrooms. The renovation and expansion is a LEED project and features the use of Marvair® Scholar III air source heat pumps for the HVAC system in seven of the new classrooms. The Scholar III units provide heating, cooling and ventilation in a single package.

The units incorporate the exclusive GreenCube™ energy recovery ventilator. Outside air is brought into the classroom through the GreenCube ERV. In the summer, heat and humidity are stripped from the outside air before it enters the classroom, reducing the heat load in the classroom by as much as 12,000 BTUH. In addition to the energy savings, another great advantage to the GreenCube ERV is that, except for the air movers, there are no moving parts – no belts or drive motors. In conjunction with the GreenCube ERV, a modulating hot gas reheat system allows precise control of the humidity in the classroom. The combination of the GreenCube ERV and the modulating hot gas reheat is unsurpassed in providing a superb learning environment at a minimum of energy usage.

The Scholar III heat pumpwas engineered to provide a number of benefits to the students, educators and school personnel. Sound levels are kept to a minimum through the use of a scroll compressor, a double wall cabinet and an electronically commutated indoor air motor. The indoor motor can be used in free blow applications or with ductwork as was used in the Jackson installation. Large, hinged doors provide easy access from the front of the unit for all service and maintenance functions. The architectural louvers were selected by the design team to coordinate with the school’s façade.
