Plans for the new Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity House in San Luis Obispo, CA are targeting LEED Gold Certification, tracking to be the first LEED-NC (LEED for New Construction) building in the City.
The new 3-story, 8,830 square foot building includes 16 bedrooms, an apartment for fraternity house parents, and a library. The building orientation takes advantage of the southern exposure for daylighting as well as passive solar heating and natural ventilation. Additional sustainable design features include photovoltaic and hot water solar panels on the roof, pervious pavers to minimize runoff, drought tolerant landscaping and building materials, and finishes that minimize the projects carbon footprint.
“This project will set a whole new standard for the students. It’s a perfect time for them to learn how to live sustainably and how to carry that through to the rest of their lives,” explained Kevin Hauber, a Lambda Chi Alpha Alumnus and current Treasurer of the Fraternity’s Housing Corporation, a non-profit that provides resources to benefit the undergraduates.
The Housing Corporation acquired their current location at 1292 Foothill in 1997, and hired RRM Design Group in 2006 to design their new facility. But it wasn’t until 2007 when the House Corporation purchased the neighboring lot (123 Crandall) that the project reached it true potential.
“The additional lot provided much needed area to meet the projects density goals and allowed for a much better solar oriented design,” explained Jim Duffy, Project Architect and LEED Accredited Professional at RRM.
RRM Design Group has been Creating Environments People Enjoy® since 1974. With 12 LEED Accredited Professionals on staff, 3 LEED Certified buildings completed, and several in design, RRM infuses environmental awareness and economic viability into Community Planning & Design, Public Safety, Recreation, Education, and Urban Revitalization projects throughout California.
