Harvard University's new Library Services Building, designed by Leers Weinzapfel Associates and Samuel Anderson Architects, demonstrates that a sustainable building can be constructed despite the challenges associated with a small urban site, an extensive public approvals process, and strict temperature and humidity requirements.
The project, which was just awarded LEED Gold Certification, includes a graywater system; Energy star roofing; day-lighting and exterior views throughout; site lighting with cut-off to prevent night-sky pollution; Xeriscaping and no permanent irrigation system; geothermal wells and heat pumps for all heating and cooling w/ VSD’s on hot and chilled water pumps; occupancy sensors throughout the building; 32% more energy efficient than a standard building; extensive building commissioning process including design and all subsequent phases; 43% water use reduction compared to EP Act of 1992; 100% of electricity is offset by RECs; over 50% of material manufactured within 500 miles; 90% of wood was certified by Forest Stewardship Council, 30% fly-ash in cement mixture for concrete; 96% of construction and demolition waste diverted from landfills; Low VOC-emitting materials; Construction IAQ Management Plan; Green cleaning contract.
Additionally, the open workspaces grouped at the north side of each floor take advantage of the abundant natural illumination while dropped ceilings surrounding the core contain mechanical equipment, leaving slabs exposed through the façade. Up-lights in custom workstations illuminate uncluttered slabs, enhancing the building’s transparency.
Profiling the New Library Services building would give readers insight into overcoming extreme challenges while making sustainable design a priority.
