To Deliver A Water Conservation Message That Sticks

Durham, N.C. -- Many cities facing drought conditions need to communicate their mandatory water restrictions and schedules. In December 2007, 63% of the Southeast and 100% of the state of North Carolina was classified as experiencing severe to exceptional drought. To minimize potential shut-offs and conserve its water resources, the City of Raleigh turned to Magnetic Attractions to deliver a cost-effective message that stuck -- literally.

Immediately prior to the summer water restrictions went into effect, more 160,000 households in Raleigh, N.C. received an oversized, 5.25x8.5-inch postcards with an attached 3.5x4-inch magnet. The postcard announced the effective date and irrigation instructions. The magnet reinforced the rules and included a graphic representation of the guidelines for each week.

Recipients easily and neatly detached the magnet from the postcard thanks to Magnetic Attractions’ dry peel technology. “Postcards with dry peel magnets provide a secure, worry-free mailer delivered to the recipient as the sender intended. The message is clearly and colorfully displayed on the printed postcard and reinforced on the reverse side with the attached magnetic promotion,” says John Dowling, general manager of Magnetic Attractions. “You simply and cleanly peel off the magnet from the card stock. There is no damage to the postcard and no sticky residue. And long after the postcard has been filed away, the magnet remains to keep your message top-of-mind.”

As Raleigh resident Rodney Holloway told a local ABC news reporter, “I’ll put in on the refrigerator. Even though I’m aware of what days I can water and what day I can’t, I think it’ll be helpful.”
