MINNEAPOLIS -- KKE Architects, Inc. won a Gold Award in the 2008 NAHB 50+ Housing Council for its design of Santa Barbara Palms, an affordable, energy-efficient, multi-housing property for seniors being built in the Las Vegas area. Held May 20th in New Orleans, the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) Best of 50+ Housing Awards are considered the premier design and marketing competition for the seniors housing industry.

Canadian Bioenergy Association Canada Joins New World Bioenergy Association

The WBA aims to be the global voice for bioenergy, and to promote the use of biomass in a sustainable and economically efficient way. The organisation will also promote trade with biofuels and biomass, standardisation of fuels, technical development and research. An important task is to monitor potential for bioenergy in different parts of the world. WBA also plans to help to develop certification systems to ensure that bioenergy is produced in an environmentally-friendly way, and under acceptable working conditions.

AIA Academy of Architecture for Justice Establishes “Sustainable Justice” Committee

Washington, D.C. – February 7, 2008 – The Academy of Architecture for Justice (AAJ), a knowledge community within the American Institute of Architects (AIA) that focuses on the planning, design and delivery of justice architecture, has established a Sustainable Justice Committee. The group will be co-chaired by Susan K. Oldroyd, AIA, LEED® AP, committee chair and Ken Ricci, FAIA.

The purpose of the committee is to promote and support sustainability in the planning, design and construction of law and justice facilities. To this end, the committee plans to publish a guide to sustainable justice and propose a LEED-J (LEED for Justice) rating system to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).

It was a second inspiring GreenBuild for me, in Chicago. Many folks – and I – had not been familiar with the city. Coming from Toronto, I noticed wistfully the great and beautiful variety of architecture; the public accessibility to the waterfront; the publicized civic pride in sustainable buildings; and the broad expanses of native plantings on sidewalks – not just medians - that allowed trees’ roots enough room to take up water. Not at all like the sometimes square-foot, or concrete ‘box’ tree-allowances in T.O.
