EDnote: Indicators are an important analytical tool for assessing the health of and policies for communities.  Traffic Speed, high school drop-out rates, crime, volunteerism, divorce rates, and bio-diversity are just some of the indicators planners and general plan creators can use.  In the trial analysis of this indicator, the scientists used data from over 2000 historical trends in national populations of birds, butterflies and mammals, for a total of 273 species.
