Toledo's Hawkins Elementary strives for LEED Gold New

Wausau, Wis. (Mar. 2010) -- When Toledo Public Schools opened Hawkins Elementary last month, it was difficult to tell who had the biggest smiles: the students who would be the first to occupy the building, the teachers and staff who would enjoy working in classrooms filled with natural sunlight, or the community members who supported the area's first, "green" school building.

Climate Friendly Retrofits New

As Stimulus dollars continue to flow, we observe a significant and expanding investment in “building retrofit” programs. While some actual retrofitting is being financed, much of the money is being used to audit houses, report findings to homeowners, and market conventional efficiency upgrades. The stimulus investment will invariably save some energy, but it is not on a track to capture the vitally needed carbon reduction potential of buildings.

Precast Concrete Cells help Washington's Coyote Ridge Correctional Facility Attain LEED Gold Certification

In October The Coyote Ridge Corrections Center received LEED Gold certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, making it the first entire prison campus in the country to meet the council’s standards for sustainable design, according to the Washington Department of Corrections.

Valley View Schools Improve Efficiency

The Valley View Independent School District (VVISD) in Valley View, Texas, is implementing $1.2 million in facility enhancements designed to improve operations, comfort and efficiency at nine district buildings. Schneider Electric, the global specialist in energy management, will complete the work as a performance contract with the district. Schneider Electric guarantees that VVISD will reduce its utility costs by more than $52,000 annually when the project is completed in June 2010.

BaleHaus at Bath project will assess straw as a sustainable building material

BaleHaus@Bath is part of a major new research project into how these renewable building materials can be used for homes of the future. Researchers from the University of Baths BRE Centre in Innovative Construction Materials, will be monitoring the house for a year for its insulating properties, humidity levels, air tightness and sound insulation qualities to assess the performance of straw and hemp as building materials.
