Over the past three years the Columbia Valley Botanical Gardens & Center for Sustainable Living partnered with David Thompson Secondary School and over 300 volunteers, local businesses and expertise in a project to develop the Community Greenhouse in Invermere, BC Canada. The Community Greenhouse is an educational facility with a focus on enhancing local food security, reducing the carbon footprint of food production & transportation in a facility that has a net zero energy goal in its operation. Solar thermal & PV, rainwater collection, annualized geo-thermal, air heat exchange and high insulation values are some of the incorporated features that sets this greenhouse apart from conventional greenhouse. LED lighting, large scale composting, solar electric vehicles, wood gasification and a community garden are possible future additions being considered.

School and community programs in horticulture and sustainability are well underway, media coverage strong and interest from other communities across Canada & the US continues to grow.
